House Tour : Rocky Mountain Retreat

Step Inside This Rocky Mountain Estate

This 15,000 square foot estate rests high up on a mountain and boasts breathtaking panoramic views. Utilized predominantly during the Fall and Winter ski season, the interior of the Rocky Mountain Estate is influenced by its peaceful surroundings. Large windows invite the outdoors in and provide a stunning backdrop to showcase the owners’ extensive art collection.

Adorned in exquisite, primitive art and textiles, the home is a mixture of old and new, east and west. An affinity for lifestyle and culture manifests through the use of custom-designed and antique Chinese and Deco art and furniture. Designing around prominent art collections can be challenging, but the restrictions it places on furniture selections and other elements of the design process always produce incredible results.

A Natural Palette

We were mindful about the use of color, to avoid distracting from the art. Rich shades of gold, rust, brown, and green mirror the autumnal colors of Aspen, emphasizing the bucolic mountain milieu.

Natural materials are employed throughout the home. The wood species used like hickory, yew, douglas fir, and claro walnut are all native to the Aspen area. The wood contrasts with the naturally rich stone finishes used throughout the home. The use of fossil stone, in particular, adds a timeless touch.

The rugs in the home are either custom-designed or antique. The hallway runners are designed to be neutral, yet, dark enough to clearly outline a visible, directional passageways.

While the runners are similar to one another, each is a bit unique in its own right; adding a different texture to the space it occupies.

“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury” – Coco Chanel

Throughout the home we used comfortable, luxurious textiles: chenille, mohair, boiled wool, and cashmere. Every soft surface is a moment for relaxation. The mixture of tribal and geometric motifs with floral and leaf patterns, give the home its layered, lived-in character.

In the afternoon, the fierce Aspen sun pours through the home’s windows. We installed multi-layered window treatments throughout the estate to control for the sun and add dimension.

This Rocky Mountains Estate gets the most use during the best time of year to visit Aspen, in the Fall. In the beginning of October you’ll see the colors and naturalistic motifs reflected throughout the house in the surrounding mountains.
